What's Your Vision for Your Bodywork Practice?
Knowing where you want to go.
When I opened my doors for my practice about a gazillion years ago, I had a really clear vision of me using CranioSacral Therapy to help people have less stress and pain in their lives.
And one of the really fascinating things about this vision is that I always saw myself working on an adjustable electric massage table.
It used to make me a little depressed, to be perfectly honest. I mean, I was barely making enough money to keep the lights on — how in the world was I supposed to be able to afford an electric table?? There was no way!
But whenever I dreamed of my perfect practice, I could see this table in my vision. It was solid, concrete, and easily identifiable — look, there’s my electric massage table.
The rest of my vision was pretty fuzzy and pretty nebulous — I wanted to help people, but I didn’t have any details or particulars worked out.
And that was a mistake.
When you’re dreaming of your ideal practice, it’s important to get as clear as possible.
Without getting into the metaphysics of the whole thing, this clarity has an energy that will make your journey so much faster and more straightforward, and get you where you want to go.
So, let’s clarify that vision for you.
On a piece of paper or in a journal, start brainstorming about your perfect practice. You can draw, paint, or cut out pictures that give you a “feel” of what you want later. Right now, I want you to focus on specifics. These can always change as you and your practice evolve, but for now, let yourself dream, and answer the following 8 questions:
What modality do you use with your clients?
How many clients do you see each week? Each day?
Which days of the week do you work? What are your hours?
Where do you work?
What population do you work with?
How much income do you earn each week?
Your answers to these questions will give you the blueprint for your practice.
Once you realize that you only want to work weekday mornings, you can begin to schedule your clients accordingly. Or if you know in your heart that you want to do a certain modality, you can begin to work toward certification in that modality.
And as you are working through these questions, see what images come into your mind. Like my vision of an electric massage table, those images are important to the therapist you are becoming.
Knowing where you want to go in your practice can be a daunting thing to figure out. So begin with these 8 questions, and see what comes to you.
Don’t worry about the “hows” right now. Be honest and let yourself really dream.
And next week, we’ll take a look at your first steps toward your ideal practice — but first you need to know what that business looks like.
And that electric massage table? I use it every day in my office.
Next week, I’ll tell you how it came to be there…
