The Three Stages of Success for Bodyworkers

I get such a feeling of compassion and empathy when I look at this photo. This is me, circa 2006, as I was just starting in my CranioSacral practice.

I was SO sincere in my intention to help people, and that fills my heart with joy. But when I think about all the things I did wrong as I was trying to grow my practice, I can again feel all the frustration and angst I had — I was so clueless!

I don’t want you to make all the mistakes I did, so today I want to share a few things that seem so obvious to me now, but that I didn’t know then.

Creating a successful massage or bodywork practice is about so much more than marketing.

A couple of quick tips or learning a new modality are not going to solve your business problems because there is just so much more to designing a profitable business where you can serve others and make a good living doing it.

There are actually 5 areas you need to have in place to have a successful, sustainable bodywork biz — these are the key areas that we all have to look at in our business.

To be a PRO, you need to Work toward Mastery in your modality, and you must Create a Safe Container for your clients. Then you become a CEO by diving into the business side of your practice. This is where you Reflect, Build, and Sustain your dream practice.

And you’ll need to come back to these 5 phases again and again as you and your business continue to evolve and grow.

We dive deeply into each of these pieces in The Bodywork Project, and one important piece you can figure out right now is which stage of bodyworker success your business is in.

The first stage of success is what I call being a Passionate Bodyworker. You're super excited -- you're ready to serve and help as many people as you can, and to transform your passion for this work into a sustainable career. But you may have more questions than answers...

This stage of your entrepreneurship journey is exciting and overwhelming at the same time. If your plan is to make a sustainable living as a bodywork therapist, you not only have to become masterful in your treatment skills, but you also need to learn how to go Pro as an entrepreneur.

The next stage is Savvy Bodyworker. In this stage, you've been a  bodywork practitioner long enough to know that this is not just a hobby... it's a CALLING. And you're ready to step into your power and serve in a big way.

But you're still not sure how to make a bodywork career profitable and sustainable enough to support the life you want to live.

This stage of your entrepreneurship journey can feel like two steps forward and one step back. While you're confident in your modality, you're probably building up an entirely new entrepreneurial skill set while you learn by trial and error.

The final stage of success is a Pro & CEO Bodyworker. When you get to this stage, you know you've done it. You've accomplished what so many only dream of -- you've turned your passion into a career that you love!

Now, it's time to refine your business plan so that you can enjoy your LIFE as well as serving others. Maybe you’d like to begin reaching more people by teaching workshops, or creating a signature offering that is as unique as the work you do.

You’re ready to reach and serve more people, while designing a lifestyle that works for YOU.

No matter how long you’ve been practicing bodywork, once you know which stage you are in, you can begin taking the steps that will work for you and move your business forward.
